Christmas Chart #14 – Baby It’s Cold Outside

Some things do not go well together (chocolate ice-cream and mustard spring to mind) but some things, though seemingly disimmilar, work exceptionally well together, and today’s song is a perfect example.

Tom Jones is a musical giant, his voice instantly recognisable, and his solo career measured in decades of gold discs.  Cerys Matthews is the lead singer of Catatonia, has lived in Nashville, Tennessee, and has a considerably shorter solo career.  Both are Welsh, and both have stunning voices.

In 1999 they got together for a song  on Tom Jones’ cover album Reload, and that song is today’s top Christmas tune, the classic “Baby, It’s Cold Outside“:

Continuing the festive film thread from the last post today’s song is from another of my Christmas must see movie list, the feel good romantic comedy from 2003 – Love Actually.  The version you hear was actually performed by Olivia Olson who you’ll see in this clip from the film:

Christmas Chart #22 – White Christmas

When it comes to the holiday period there are a couple of films that have to be watched.  One of these films is “Holiday Inn“.  The film shows it’s age in places but this song is such a classic that it shines through.  So for your enjoyment today’s Christmas tune is Bing Crosby‘s White Christmas:

Christmas Chart #23 – Do They Know It’s Christmas

Following my last post about the atrocious new BK commercial what Christmas tune could be better than Band Aid‘s anthemic “Do They Know It’s Christmas“.  The song may have been over played in the intervening years, but I can remember the excitement of the initial release.  The intense media interest, and the idea that rockstars cared about world causes was a sparkling though, although I don’t remember the initial play on Mike Reid’s breakfast show, I do remember the show itself which definitely ages me!  So to everyone who remembers it being played on Radio 1 every few minutes, may I present the greatest collection of stars ever to assemble with some of the worst 80′s haircuts on a single record…… Band Aid……
