Suburban Surrealism

Solarised Townhouses

Sometimes an image gets into your mind and just won’t leave. This is one of those images.

For the past couple of weeks, when I have taken my stroll at lunchtime, I have passed this row of townhomes, and just wanted to take a picture of their repitition against a bright blue sky, then hit the whole image with a blast of a solarising filter in Photoshop. Today, I finally remembered my camera, and I did it…

It isn’t the best picture ever, and the effect isn’t applied with a magician’s touch, but I think it has captured that feeling I have had in my mind’s eye. For me it has captured the decay that suburban growth brings, the desolation of identical vinyl sided boxes, the cloying sameness that is stifling individuality in the architecture of the suburbs.
