Not a lot of people know that handguns are actually banned in Washington D.C. and have been for over 30 years!
The Firearms Control Regulations Act of 1975 prohibited residents from owning handguns, excluding handguns registered prior to February 5, 1977. Other local laws prohibit carrying guns (concealed or not), and all guns and ammunition must be registered.
Even with these strict laws, the easy influx of weaponry from northern Virginia (home of the National Rifle Association) and southern Maryland means that the local news reports a never ending flow of gun related robberies and murders. In 2007 the murder rate is already over 180, well over the 169 in 2006 (a 20 year low).
So it amazes me that at a time when you would expect neighbouring states to maybe introduce some sensible legislation to reduce the number of guns falling in to the wrong hands there are folks in D.C. pushing to have the handgun restriction lifted. You can read more about the ongoing case on BBC news here: Deep divisions over US gun control and you can expect gun control to be a hot issue in the up coming presidential elections.
For everyone who reads this and says “Well, guns don’t kill people, people kill people, so I should be able to have a gun if I want one” just remember;
In cases of gun crime “Guns don’t kill people, people with guns kill people”.
